Sub-Floor Preparation.
Cosytoes SoftmatThe sub-floor should be clean, secure and level. It should also be free of lumps and sharp edges. The floor should then be covered with 5mm polyethylene foam sheeting. This can be secured with staples, or stuck down with a suitable carpet adhesive if the sub-floor is concrete.

Preparing the Electrical Supply.
It is advised that all electrical connections be made by a qualified electrician and comply with current IEE regulations. A correctly rated, dedicated residual current device (RCD) should be installed, which will isolate power to the heating system should any damage be sustained.

Laying the Mat.
Note: Before unrolling the mat, do a circuit test
Cosytoes SoftmatThe power supply will be the point where the mat will start and finish. Roll out the mat from the start point, foil side up. Cut the mat mesh along the appropriate line and return in the opposite direction. The metal strips supplied are used to cover the heating element where the foil has been cut to turn the mat. The foil backing acts as the earth connection. Remember that the cable SHOULD NOT be cut or shortened and MUST NOT cross,Continue until the floor area is covered. The cable can be cut away from the mesh and run as loose cable if required. Do not fix until you are satisfied with the layout. A 10mm space should be allowed around the perimeter of the heated area. When satisfied, fix the mat bystapling the mesh. Do not staple the cable. Cover the mat with cardboard to prevent risk of damage before laying the final floor finish. For use with carpet allow extra space around the perimeter for the Grippa and go easy on the thickness of underlay and carpet. Avoid heavy point loads, e.g. from furniture, that may deform the carpet and underlay, and damage the heating cable.

Install the Thermostat.
Install the timerstat or thermostat following the instructions supplied. Provisions must be made for positioning the temperature probe before laying the final floor covering. The probe should be positioned between two runs of heater cable and the easiest way is to ‘cut a slot’ out of the foam sheeting that is underneath the mat, to accommodate the probe thickness.

Laying the Floor Covering.
Cosytoes SoftmatOnce the mat has been secured, the floor is immediately ready for its final covering. It is recommended that before beginning to lay the floor covering, a further circuit test be carried out to ensure the cable has not been damaged when laid. It is also a good idea to make further tests during installation of the floor covering. Do not fix anything to the floor with anything likely to damage the heating cable such as nails or screws.
